Antoni Gaudi is synonymous of Barcelona. You can’t possibly visit Barcelona without noticing the influence of this architectural genius all around the city. The symbols of Gaudi’s organic architecture, architectural art, and breathtaking geometry can be found all over Barcelona. When you have a chance to visit Barcelona, please make sure you visit the following 4 spots:
La Sagrada Familia or Holy Family, is an absolute must visit when in Barcelona. This extraordinary temple has been continuously under construction since 1866. The construction is on schedule to be completed in 2026, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mr. Gaudi’s death. Standing outside the building and admiring the colossal Byzantine and Gothic architecture will leave you truly speechless. The exterior architecture is so beautiful, but the interior simply takes your breath away. The organic architecture used by Mr. Gaudi, using natural elements and natural light are so amazing, the intimacy yet the magnitude of standing in the temple is almost impossible to be described, it must be experienced. Please book your tickets in advance, often, tickets are sold out for weeks and you run the risk of not visiting this amazing place. Also, please follow the dress code to visit the church. Cover your shoulders, no shorts, or short skirts are allowed. No see-through clothing, plunging necklines, or exposed backs or bellies. A guided tour is highly suggested when visiting La Sagrada Familia. I am not one to usually spend extra money on tours, but decided to book a tour when tickets were sold out. Luckily, we were able to get tickets using a tour operator, and I am so glad we did, because we learned a wealth of information we wouldn’t have learned otherwise. If you are in a tight budget, it is good to note that La Sagrada Familia is an operating church, and on Sundays there is a service you can attend, it is free.

Casa Mila or La Pedrera– An extraordinary example of Gaudi’s architectural creativity. The building was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO, and is currently owned by Catalunya Foundation. It is open to tour and a visit is recommended. Built in 1906 with a façade making you feel as if waves are coming towards you. With a stunning rooftop terrace, almost taken from a storybook. The interior courtyard and beautiful interior arches are so elegant and flow so beautifully. It is such a contrast to see the futuristic architecture with the interior exposition on the way of life in 1900’s. La Pedrera offers many activities such as live music, workshops, and special exhibitions, maybe you are lucky and catch a special event happing during your visit.

Casa Batllo– Also known as the House of Bones for its exterior resemblance to bones. It’s truly a masterpiece! With beautifully flowing geometric lines, gorgeous oval windows, intricate stone work, and colorful mosaics made of broken ceramic tiles makes Casa Batllo a must visit. The house’s main skylight architecture diffuses natural light in such a stunning way, and showcases the blue tiles, simply remarkable. The exterior lighting at night makes the façade of the house look so dreamy, if possible, visit at night.

Park Guell– The park was commissioned by Euseby Guell, who wanted to create a stylish park for Barcelona’s aristocracy. The park has amazing stone sculptures, beautiful mosaic colored tiles, pillars of stones, and breathtaking views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea. Be sure you stay to experience a sunset, and please obtain tickets in advance, often, tickets are sold out and it will be a pity not to be able to visit this park. Also, be sure to visit Mr. Gaudi’s house, the beautiful pink, castle looking building located next door to the park.

Stunning photos of Barcelona and it’s definitely on my list. I’ve heard that the locals are rude and seem to tire of tourists and the overcrowding it brings. I guess that everywhere…not the rudeness, though.

Hi Kemi! Barcelona is gorgeous. We found Catalans to be very friendly. Good to note that we encountered a lot of foreigners living in Barcelona. Many from Asia, South America, and other parts of Europe. Go visit, you won’t be disappointed.

We arrived in Barcelona on a Friday evening and decided to take a walk and the Sagrada was our first stop and to see this marvel of Gaudí’s mind at night was great and awe-inspiring but when we returned the following day and saw it in its entirety my mind was blown, Gaudí was a true visionary and everybody should take the time whether religious or not to see this almost organic building !
